Lakeview Elementary School students had an unforgettable and inspiring experience when they welcomed Bash the Trash – Sustainable Sounds, a special program that blended music, science and environmental awareness in a fun and interactive way on Jan. 10. Three talented performers, Ian, Jordan and Rachel, took the stage with an impressive collection of original musical instruments – each one crafted from everyday items that would otherwise be thrown away, from plastic bottles to metal cans and even discarded pipes.
“The PTO reviewed several sustainability programs before we selected this one,” Lakeview PTO Vice President Cat Myers said. “We chose ‘Bash the Trash’ because the performers talk to students about the environment in a fun, approachable way.”
More than just a concert, the performance was an engaging STEAM experience. The students listened to the amazing sounds created from the handmade instruments while learning the science behind them. Through the creative use of materials, the performers explained the principles of sound waves and vibration in ways that were both accessible and fun.
As the performers demonstrated how trash can be transformed into musical instruments, they also shared important facts about the environmental challenges facing our planet and how students can play an active role in making a difference. The show emphasized how the 3Rs, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, as well as rethinking how we use everyday materials, can have a big impact on the world around us.
The dynamic and educational experience was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Lakeview Elementary School PTO. The Bash the Trash program offers a powerful reminder that science, art and the environment are all interconnected and everyone has a role to play in the fight against plastic pollution and climate change.
