The Mahopac Central School District Board of Education announced that Superintendent of Schools Christine Tona will retire from her role, following her official announcement during the board’s meeting on Aug. 5. Tona has served as superintendent for the past three years, during which Mahopac schools have been recognized as among the top in the region and across New York State.

The board of education expressed its deep gratitude to Tona for her service and leadership.

“Her hard work and dedication to the success of all children have helped to make our district and community an exemplary district of which we are very proud and we wish her the best,” the board of education said in a statement.

Following the acceptance of Tona’s retirement, which will be effective Aug. 31, the board appointed Frank Miele as acting superintendent. A longtime educator and leader in Mahopac, Miele stepped into his new role on Aug. 7. He previously served as an interim superintendent of schools for Mahopac in 2021. Prior to that, he worked in the district for 39 years as a physical education teacher, assistant principal, coach and athletics director at Mahopac High School. Miele also coached baseball for Western Connecticut State University.

“My vision as acting superintendent is to work tirelessly to ensure that Mahopac is a district of excellence,” Miele said.  “I believe strongly in celebrating the achievements of our students and staff while also taking a thoughtful look at where we can continue to grow.”

Miele received a master’s degree in counseling and a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Central Connecticut State University. He also earned an advanced diploma in administration from Southern Connecticut State University.

Welcome Frank Miele
