Kindergartners at Austin Road Elementary School enjoyed a visit from PNW BOCES naturalist Sam Pierce. She explained what a meteorologist is and described the types of tools a weather scientist might use to gather weather data. She demonstrated how the kindergartners already have the tools to figure out the weather, and the students discussed how they might use their five senses to gather information about the weather.
Through an engaging presentation, the students first tested their senses by taking turns guessing a mystery smell (eucalyptus) and a mystery touch (a shell), as well as testing their other senses, and then went outside to work with Pierce to determine the current weather conditions using just those five senses. The students felt the wind on their faces, heard the crunching of leaves that were on the ground, observed the clouds in the blue sky, and felt the warmth of the sun.
"The kindergartners were excited to use their five senses to help gauge the weather," Mahopac teacher Megan Wisotsky said. "Thank you to Ms. Pierce for teaching our students how to be meteorologists!"
