Black History Month

As part of Mahopac's ongoing commitment to celebrating cultural heritage and fostering diversity year-round, we are pleased to highlight meaningful Black History Month projects taking place across our schools.

Teachers at Lakeview and Fulmar Road elementary schools hosted a special scavenger hunt that highlighted the achievements of Black historical figures. Throughout February, vibrant posters featuring these remarkable individuals were displayed along the hallways and students from all grade levels were invited to participate in the activities. Equipped with worksheets, students eagerly explored the school to learn about each honoree.

“The scavenger hunt was a fun and educational activity for all of our students,” Lakeview teacher Stephanie Gaur said. “It provided an opportunity for students to work together in teams, strengthening their knowledge of Black history while fostering a sense of respect and appreciation for diversity.”

Some of the historical figures overcame disabilities, and their posters highlighted how these trailblazers triumphed over challenges demonstrating resilience and determination. This project was designed not only to recognize the importance of Black history but also to promote disability awareness and inclusivity within the school community.

By taking part in these activities, the students gained a deeper understanding of Black history and how it continues to shape our world today, and learned valuable lessons in empathy and inclusion.

Next week we’ll spotlight 3D pop-up biographies from Austin Road Elementary School.
