The Positive Action Club at Mahopac Middle School hosted a Penny War from Jan. 27-Feb. 7 to raise funds for the JennaJackPack Project, an organization dedicated to supporting children who have experienced the devastating loss of a parent or sibling.
The JennaJackPack Project partners with schools, youth groups, businesses and local communities to create and deliver customized “JennaJackPacks,” which are filled with comforting items to help grieving children cope during a challenging time. The project is named in part to honor Jenna Nolan, a cherished former Mahopac Middle School student who tragically passed away. Jenna was known for her dedication to her studies, leadership on the soccer field, and, above all, her unwavering empathy and compassion. Her legacy of kindness and support continues to inspire all who knew her.
During the Penny War, each class had its own jug placed outside the cafeteria. Students competed by donating pennies and dollars to their own class’s jug which added points, while silver coins were used to sabotage other classes by deducting points. On one special day, donating a dollar or more earned students a fresh bag of popcorn during their lunch period. The winning team with the highest total at the end of the Penny War fundraiser was Team 7A who earned an ice cream party as their reward for supporting a great cause.
Members of the Positive Action Club are proud to have supported the JennaJackPack Project, and thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of the students and staff, the fundraiser was a huge success. The club expressed its gratitude to Bliss Dairy Bar & Grill for their support. This event not only helped raise funds but also encouraged students to think about ways they can make a difference in their community and support their peers through tough times.
